Background-The Punjab Public School was started in 1960 with a view to provide quality public school education to the deserving children of the ex-servicemen, serving personnel of the defence forces and the civilians. The guiding force in the opening of the school was Sardai Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab. The school was formally inaugurated by Dr. Rajendra Prasad. President of India in April 1961. The school in it initial stages was financed by the Post-War-Services Reconstruction Fund primarily helping the wards of the defence personnel as well as children from rural background to have best of education within the State which otherwise these individuals could not afford. As of now the 80% population of the school are from the rural background and they are from the middle class families. The school is doing efforts to provide them with a platform to have an excellent education at par with the National standards. The most important characteristics of this school, as of other public schools, is that we follow the noble principle of the Indian Constitution i.e. equal opportunity to all in tile field of education. The Punjab Public School, Nabha is rated among the best Residential Public Schools of the Country. Campus — The Punjab Government donated the New Secretariat, the Old Secretariat, and the Guest House of the Nabha State to the school in 1960. There are approximately 42 acres of lawns and garden around these buildings. In addition, there is another 60 acres of land being used as playfields and the school farm. The whole school can play games at the same time. The school has four double storeyed senior boys hostels with a capacity of 75 boys each, looked after by a Housemaster.
The Teaching Staff - To impart quality education and bring about cultural synthesis, highly qualified staff is drawn from all over India. Teacher to Taught ratio is maintained at 1.20. The Pupils -It is a co-educational institution. The total strength of the school is roughly around 979 students. The school is divided into four Houses i.e. Beas, Jumna, Ravi and Sutlej. The "House system" creates a spirit of healthy competition in the sphere of sports and other activities. Affiliation - The Punjab Public School, Nabha is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), New Delhi. Students are prepared to take ICSE (Indian Certificate of Secondary Education Examination) at the end of Class X and 1SC (Indian School Certificate Examination) at the end of class XII. Sports - Students play games throughout the year. The major games are cricket, football and hockey. Squash, tennis, basketball, volleyball and badminton are also played. Horse riding and swimming are also regular feature on the sports scene. There are short sessions of athletics, boxing and cross country runs. The school participates in Inter Public School Meets and matches in athletics, cricket, football, hockey, horse riding and swimming. The school won the IPSC Tournament in different games / sports activities many times. The school's Riding Team - decidedly the best in the country - has been Equestrian Champions at the National/ IPSC level for the last 15 years.
Extra Curricular Activities - The school has a distinction of having all three wings of NCC Army, Navy and Air Force and Girls NCC which motivate the cadets to join the Armed Forces. The school is also an active member of United Kingdom International Award for Young People (earlier known as Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme). To ensure that students get broad based education a large number of clubs and societies actively function in the school. To name a few Nature and Ecology Club, Photography, club, Computer Club, Hiking Club, Horticulture Society, English Literacy Society, Riding Club, World Forum, Cycling Club. Electronics Club Dramatics. History society and Philatelic association. These are run by the boys under the supervision of the teachers. Each of the four houses presents a show from time to time and the school Dramatic Society stages plays in English, Hindi and Punjabi. The school orchestra is very popular with the students. Indian and western music band, elocution and drama play a big role in the lives of our students assisting in the development of self confidence. The school's pipe band has the distinction of participating in all the major events held at Nabha, Patiala and also participating in the Republic Day Parade at New Delhi. To stimulate a spirit of adventurous living, the boys are encouraged to participate in adventure and leadership activities. The boys regularly participate in adventure courses conducted by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Uttarkashi. A few of the teachers have also been trained at these national institutions to act as qualified instructors-for adventure training. Management - The Governor of Punjab is the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Punjab Public School. The other ex-officio members of high powered board are the Chief Minister, Finance Minister, Education Minister, Punjab, GOC-in-C, Western Command, Chief Secretary Punjab etc. The chairman also appoints eight
Management - The Governor of Punjab is the Ex-Officio Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Punjab Public School. The other ex-officio members of high powered board are the Chief Minister, Finance Minister, Education Minister, Punjab, GOC-in-C, Western Command, Chief Secretary Punjab etc. The chairman also appoints eight eminent persons from different walks of life on the board. Alumni - The School is proud of its ethos and values & has a very rich cultural heritage with a strong sense of belonging between the past & present. The School has made tremendous contribution to the Defence Forces in the Officer Cadre. The School also boast of having large Serving 'General' rank Officers (Major Generals and Lt Generals) and also large number Officers of the rank of Colonels and above in the Armed Forces. Today we have General Bikram Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC (Retd) Former Chief of the Army Staff and Former Vice Admiral Satish Soni, PVSM, AVSM, NM (Retd) who was the second-in-command in the Indian Navy shows that the school has achieved in what it set out for. The School has also produced a large number of civil services. Politics, Media, Industries, investment bankers, author, film and documentary maker and other professions within the country as well as abroad, besides Armed Forces.
